Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 103:1b-2, 3-4, 8-9, 10-11
A reflection on today's Scripture:
In our fast-paced world it is sometimes easy to lose sight of our priorities. The readings of today contain much drama and contrast which speak to this point.
In the first lengthy reading we have Abraham questioning the Lord about what it would take to keep Him from destroying Sodom. Abraham keeps asking about how many innocent people it would take to hold back the wrath of God, and we read that "even if there were ten innocent people,” God would spare the city. (Genesis 18:16-33)
When we speak of priorities, we will never know in this life how much our attempts at fidelity to Christ and His teachings have spared others! Perhaps for the sake of our own spiritual development, it is just as well that we do not know this.
What is Christ telling us in the gospel? He shares that "even the birds have a place to rest, but that He, the Son of Man has nowhere to rest His head." (Matthew 8:18-22) Note that He says the Son of Man, not the Son of God. It is said that He commonly referred to Himself in this way, identifying himself with all humanity.
Was Christ telling us that there is much to be done in building up the kingdom of God? Was He making reference to a sense of detachment from the basic necessities of life? Was He saving His resting time for that precious time when He would go off by Himself to pray with His and our Father? Was He advocating the role of a workaholic?
We think not, as we also know that Christ dined with friends, established friendships, and participated in family celebrations such as the wedding at Cana. The answer to those questions may vary from time to time in our own reflections, but they all speak to priorities. Where does Christ fit into our own lives, today and every day?
