Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 29, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 12:1-11
Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18
Matthew 16:13-19

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, the Church has chosen the reading about how an angel of the Lord delivered St. Peter from prison. It is a rather exciting account even on just a story-level. If however we don't read it carefully, we might miss some very important points.

First of all, for St. Peter, deliverance came unexpectedly. He didn't seem to be awake waiting to be rescued, but we are told he was asleep. Holy Scripture says he was bound by chains with a guard on either side of him. Still Peter slept - tired out to the point of exhaustion perhaps, but asleep nevertheless.

The second point that is important to recognize is that the whole Church was praying for him. They knew that James, the brother of John, had been killed by the sword and with Peter in prison they had every reason to believe that his fate would be as grim and so they prayed. They prayed hoping that God would hear and answer them.

So we have the two points illustrated very nicely, resignation to the will of God on one hand as exhibited by Peter, and hope in the power of intercessory pray on the other as demonstrated by the praying Church.

Together they give us the perfect example of Christian behavior-resignation to the will of God and the power of prayer in times of difficulty.

So then, let us employ these powerful reminders in the circumstances of our own lives. Let us pray with great fervor and then rest peacefully knowing in the end, our final destiny is in the hands of God.
