Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Genesis 16:1-12, 15-16
Psalm 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5
A reflection on today's Scripture:
Don't judge a book by its cover!
This is a very common expression that implies that we should look deeper to know who a person really is.
In today's gospel Jesus is trying to teach us, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?" Then I will declare to them solemnly, "I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers." (Matthew 7:21-23)
Jesus does not recognize these false prophets because they are not doing the Father's will. Their hearts are not in the right place. This brings us to the question, "Is a good deed ever done for the wrong reasons right?" According to Jesus, no, God's will must come first and to go against it is to do wrong.
After His teaching, those around him were astonished that He taught with authority (Matthew 7:29). This authority comes from being united with the will of God the Father. We too can have this authority and teach those around us. All that is required is that we live as Jesus, with our lives united with God the Father in prayer and by following His will.
