Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 33:12-13, 18-19, 20 and 22
A reflection on today's Scripture:
What interesting subjects to combine in the readings for today! We have the message of God to Abram at age 75 to pick up and start a new life, and the subject of judging others.
Can you imagine the conversations that might have been taking place along the journey as Abram was moving to a new land with his wife? People must have wondered if he was of sound mind! Even today people do not usually start life all over again at age 75. There may have been some significant judging going on. A key factor for us to remember is that Abram knew what he was to do and did not turn back despite the probable judgment by others.
In the gospel, it is Christ Himself who tells His disciples not to judge others. (And note, it is the disciples, those close to Him, that He has to tell, not the unschooled.) They are taught that if they judge others they will be judged by the same measure by which they judged others. (Matthew 7:1-5 ) That is pretty scary, given that none of us are perfect!
There is a little saying that helps us when we are tempted to judge another. If you put your index finger forward to point out the faults of another, you have your four fingers pointing back at yourself. We often note the faults in others that we have in ourselves! It is something to think about.
