Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 23, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Psalm 34:8-9, 10-11, 12-13
Matthew 6:24-34

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Back when God gave Moses and the Israelites the law, the first of the Ten Commandments said that we are to place no other gods ahead of the one, true God. It went on to say that God is a jealous god and that all idolatry was forbidden.

Today we hear the Lord tell us that we cannot serve two masters and in attempting to do so we truly will serve only one and despise the other. It seems that we, as creatures, are not capable of dividing our loyalties equally. God knows this, and thus the reason for the First Commandment and the warnings our Lord gives us today.

There is nothing inherently wrong with money or any other thing found on this earth. Our problems arise when we put money, or anything else for that matter, before God and essentially make an idol of it. When our loyalty is to the "thing" and not to God, problems are soon to follow.

Jesus' guidance is right on: "But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides." God should be first and in His love for us, we will be cared for.
