Tobit 13:2, 6efgh, 7, 8
Mark 12:38-44

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

When we think of giving to the Church we nearly always think of giving money and for most of us we give out of our abundance and not our poverty. Very few of us step up and give all we have, but have you ever known anyone who did?

For years the parish to which I belong, was blessed with a wonderful woman who cleaned the church. She would sweep, vacuum, dust, polish pews and do anything necessary to keep the church sparkling. She was always there to clean up some terrible mess or to prepare for a wedding, funeral or other service. Well past the age of retirement, she worked harder than three big men and she truly gave all she had. Her gift was not in money, but in time, work, and unending service.

She joined the Lord in eternity a couple years ago, but I still remember her, always smiling and full of joy and love. This was her reward for giving all she had: a deep love the Lord gave her for her service, a love that only one who gave it all could have.

Have you ever known someone like this? Reflect on today’s gospel and those you have known when you prepare your next gift to the Lord.
