Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 5, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Tobit 2:9-14
Psalm 112:1-2, 7-9
Mark 12:13-17

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God. (Mark 12:17)

Today's readings illustrate that righteous, sincere lovers of God will suffer much in this world. They will endure pain and sorrow from seeing souls who by choice have rejected God; also they will often be subjected to abuse by such infidels.

Tobit was a righteous and devout man who was exiled from Israel to Ninevah by their invading army. He was struck blind for several years when his eyes became infected; displaced from his home, and deprived access to all his possessions.

Despite misfortune, Tobit remained faithful to God, but when his wife turned angrily against him for telling her to return the goat she had received for food as a bonus for cloth she'd woven for heathens, he became despondent and prayed to God for death. In the end, his firm faith, in the face of devastation, was rewarded by God.

Jesus Christ, the most righteous of men, was "set up" by officials seeking to embroil Him in the conflict between the Pharisees who despised their nation's Roman rule and the Herodians who were more amenable to Rome's presence. They asked Jesus to resolve the dispute over the Israelites paying taxes to Caesar.

Christ pointed out that since their coins bore the image and inscription of Caesar, they should render to Caesar what is his and give to God what belongs to Him. We repay God by giving Him our unconditional love, trust, obedience, devotion and thanksgiving for forgiving our sin, releasing us from its power and enabling us to live new, peaceful and holy lives in Christ through His Spirit.

All powerful God, we thank you for remaining with us in times of tribulation. Help us to faithfully respond by drawing ever closer to You in every circumstance. Amen.
