Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Sir 44:1, 9-13
Psalm 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b
John 11:11-26

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

In today's Responsorial Psalm we hear a very interesting word that tells us something about God and something about us. It says, "The Lord delights in His people."

The word delights brings to our mind something quite different than what we have come to ordinarily associate with God. We hear time and time again of God's great love for us and how He has manifested His love for. But have we ever considered that God not only loves us, but delights in us?

When I experience delight it is somewhat like experiencing love, but without all the overtones (and sometimes undertones) associated with that powerful word. Love embraces all the wonderful things we usually associate with it, but also reminds us of the price of love and the responsibility of being loved, things not always so delightful.

Delight is somewhat different; though joyful, warm and wonderful, like love. It comes without any thought of price or consequence. It is like the feeling you get when you look at your dear pet (and they respond by looking at you) and just them being what they are, makes you happy.

Now I'm not saying that we are like pets to the Almightily (although even that would be more than we deserve), but simply that God finds in us something so lovely that the word delight appropriately describes it.

Let us then love God who delights in us and in return love and delight in others and ourselves, because of it.
