Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Zephaniah 3:14-18a
Isaiah 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6
Luke 1:39-56

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. (Luke 1:45)

While it's common to think that role models are only useful for the young, we need them at every stage of our lives. Certainly, Mary is our perfect role model of what God desires from us. Long before Jesus cried out, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit," (Luke 23:46) as He died on the cross for our salvation, Mary responded quietly, accepting God's will with the simple words, "Let it be done to me according to your word." (Luke 1:38) From Mary we learn that by fully opening our hearts to God we will understand the mystery of our own existence and will bear the abundant fruits of His grace.

But, when God calls us, He gives us only enough for us to say "yes"--only enough for us to put ourselves in His hands and murmur, "Let it be done to me according to your word." If our living is to be genuinely Christian, we must put our faith, trust and hope in God. In the midst of sin, doubt, sorrow and death we must remain confident because in doing what God tells us, we grow in holiness, and by living out the Gospel message, we become increasingly capable of loving in the way that Jesus loved.

Mary, show us how. Teach us to trust in God as you did. Let us do what sometimes seems unthinkable in this world: to be humble and to accept without always understanding why or how. Teach us how to imitate you as we pray, "Open my heart. Let me be your servant. Lead me where you desire. You will be with me."
