Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 15:1-6
Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5
John 15:1-8

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

I am the True Vine . . . . (see John 15:1ff)

Jesus tells us that all of the life we have in the Spirit is life that comes through the true vine, through Him.

But for some, that is insufficient. We don't want to be mere grapes. We prefer strawberries, tangerines, grapefruits. Some don't want to be part of the vine, but a vine unto themselves. In fact, every one of us at one time or another wants precisely this. "How so?" you might ask. Every time we choose to do things in our way, we say, in essence, "You are not enough."

But if we do not become part of the vintage of Heaven, we become nothing at all. It is grapes or nothing, living in God or nothing, knowing Jesus or nothing. The hardest part is that there can be no half-measures. You can't be half-grafted onto the grape vine. There is no half-grape, half-juniper. God is a god who wants us all for Himself--completely, entirely, without stint or quibble.

And so, we turn to the True Vine and beg that we be the cluster of grapes closest to the trunk, to the deep, merciful heart of the Vine, to the person of Jesus Himself.
