Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 145:10-13, 21
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
Peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. (see John 14:27)
Peace, as experienced in this world is sporadic and uneasy at best. Humans seem always to seek reasons to crash against God and one another, either verbally or physically. Man's stealth, ingenuity and hostility are inexhaustible.
Sin has destroyed our ability to live peacefully because it is a Godless, loveless, unforgiving and truthless preoccupation with self-satisfaction, self-gain and an indomitable self-will. This applies to individuals and hence, through powerful people, to entire nations or cultures.
Peace offered to us by Christ is perfect and permanent because in His human flesh He put our sin to death on the cross, and once this human flesh dies, it can no longer sin. However, although Christ's dying sacrificially in our place wins us forgiveness and restores us to friendship with our heavenly Father, this is only the first step in God's saving plan.
Salvation is acquired through a genuine faith in Christ which means our ongoing obedience to Him, the Word of God, and through our continual yielding to His Holy Spirit, making His will our own. Living in God's love and truth is the very core of genuine, lasting peace.
Salvation is ours as we "work it out" in our lives by dying with Christ to our sinful tendencies through the guidance and power of His sanctifying Spirit. Christ's resurrection has won for us a new life that must begin now so that we may be made fit to live eternally with our "All Holy God."
Father God, redeem us and make us Your children in Christ, that we may abide in peace on this earth and win us the promised inheritance of eternal life with You. Amen.
