Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

May 1, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 11:19-26
Psalm 87:1-7
John 10:22-30

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)

Today's Gospel reveals that despite Christ's words and deeds that clearly reflected God's love, peace, joy and new hope offered to the Israelites, certain Pharisees despised Jesus. His growing popularity threatened their religious tenets, their authority and social status.

These scholarly experts interpreted Scripture and God's law through legalistic eyes and so set forth a system of worshiping God through burdensome rules unrelated to His original intention, that the Law would teach His people to love one another as He loves them, with gentleness and compassion.

These Pharisees had pridefully filled their minds with religious information, but their hearts remained empty of a true knowledge of God gained through humble prayer and obedience to His law of love sent to them in His living Word, Christ.

Christ's Church still suffers today from the errors of religious intellectuals who feel compelled to modernize and popularize the Divine Word revealed in Scripture and preserved in His one, true Church. They are aided by the informational and entertainment media that belittles and obscures traditional Christian morality that upholds the sanctity of human life and portrays love as a lasting, deeply caring and self-giving relationship.

Like the Pharisees of old, our modernists have replaced God's authority with human autonomy. Our reading today from "Acts" preserves hope, for Christ promised that God's Holy Word will never perish and will live on in the hearts of the faithful, ignited by the Holy Spirit's flame of love and truth.

O Blessed Lord, attune our minds and hearts to recognize and obey Your voice, that we may learn to live in the light of Your Presence and make you known in this world. Amen.
