Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 25, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

1 Peter 5:5b-14
Psalm 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17
Mark 16:15-20

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Proclaim the Gospel to Every Creature . . . .

Now, there's an odd instruction for you. And yet it is unmistakably our mission--to proclaim the gospel to every creature. How in the world does one go about doing that?

We proclaim the gospel in one way only--in love. Thus when we care for a pet dog, we proclaim to our pet the Gospel. When we treat one another with kindness, courtesy, and care, we proclaim the gospel. When we walk gently on the Earth and care for the things of Earth as though they were precious, borrowed things, we proclaim the gospel. When we take no more than what we need, and always try to assure that whatever is taken, a great deal more is left, we proclaim the gospel.

But most important, we proclaim the gospel by being the gospel for those who have not heard it--for birds, bees, flies, and grass--but most importantly of all, for those for whom the words were made and the Lord was sent. All creation fell in our fall, and all creation rises with us in our resurrection. When we acknowledge the Lord and Savior of all to the entire world, we proclaim the gospel to all that lives. We become, for a moment, Jesus for a weary world.
