Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

April 17, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Acts 4:32-37
Psalm 93:1-2, 5
John 3:7-15

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Do not be amazed that I told you, "You must be born from above."
(John 3:7)

Thinking of God, we can mentally visualize the terms Father and Son, but the Holy Spirit remains invisible and mysterious to us. Our "Creed" states that the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son; therefore some describe Him as the "Love" that exists within and eternally flows between the first and second Persons of our God. The Spirit is then the personification of God's powerful, unifying love that brought about and "holds in being" all of creation.

Though we cannot picture the Spirit, we come to know Him through His effects. His work can be seen in our Saints and in persons who live heroically in His truth, wisdom, justice, mercy, forgiveness and compassion--all attributes of God's love. "The Acts of the Apostles" describes a Christian community reborn of the Spirit and united in mind and heart with God.

In today's Gospel, Christ emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives; for it is He, given to us by God, Who effects in us a "new birth," enabling us through His sanctifying grace to fully live in God's Holy Word. Then our key to entering into God's kingdom is genuine faith and humble obedience to the love and truths revealed to us by Christ.

In summary: Lent calls us to practice Christ's humility and self-denial; Good Friday calls us to die with Christ to our sins; Easter Sunday invites us to participate in Christ's resurrection life, being spiritually reborn and nurtured by His Spirit to Christian maturity. Therefore, our life's mission is to bring into and share with this world our faith, hope and love.

O Glorious Lord,
fill our minds and hearts with Your new and blessed life,
that our participation in Your love and truth,
made visible in us,
will draw others to You.
Amen.
