1 Corinthians 11:23-26
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
In today's gospel, Jesus shocked His disciples by washing their feet before the meal. This was customarily done by the servants for the guests because they lived in a desert region where their feet would become dusty from travel. Afterwards Jesus instructed them: "I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." (John 13:15) The washing of feet was the first step of the model Jesus called them to follow. For that was the beginning of the Passover, and the first step toward His crucifixion.
This model of service is gradually shown to the disciples. By the washing of their feet, He shows them that service can be given by doing simple little things. Then, as it was described in St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians, by the breaking of the bread He modeled that it is important to be with others, to give of ourselves to others and that we are to be united with Him. "Do this in remembrance of me." (1 Corinthians 11:24)
The final and ultimate model is foreshadowed in the book of Exodus, where the sacrificial lamb, whose blood marked their homes, protected them. Jesus became The Lamb to save us. His crucifixion, His giving of Himself totally for us to God is the ultimate model which Jesus calls us to follow. By sacrificing ourselves for the greater good, God's divine love and will, we grow closer to God and in turn we help others to do the same.
