Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Isaiah 42:1-7
Psalm 27:1, 2, 3, 13-14
John 12:1-11

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Mary, the sister of Lazarus, took a liter of costly perfumed oil and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair. (see John 12:3)

She loved Jesus so much and was so overcome with gratefulness, not only for bringing her dead brother, Lazarus, back to life, but she knew that as her Savior, He would soon give up His life for her. With complete abandon, she thanked Him with the most precious thing she had, and her home was filled with the scent of the oil. When Judas challenged Mary for not selling the expensive oil and giving the money to the poor, Jesus came to her defense because He knew her love for Him was genuine.

Her extravagance reminds me of some friends who brought us dinner on Sunday to help out after a recent surgery. I see Mary in both of them, overflowing with the desire to stop and serve, bringing with them the most elaborate things for us to dine on–fruit, salad, dressing, bread, roasted chicken and gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, a homemade apple pie, even flowers! Extravagant! Our home was filled with the aroma of a delectable Sunday dinner, prepared with selfless love, just as Mary's home was filled with the fragrance of the oil she so generously poured over Jesus.

I also see Mary in us, overwhelmed with appreciation to have such friends, and to have their presence in our home. It's how Jesus wants us to be, genuinely giving and genuinely grateful.

"I believe that I shall see the bounty of the Lord in the land of the living." (Psalm 27:13)
