Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
March 27, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 102:2-3, 16-21
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
When you lift up the Son of man then you will realize that I Am.
(se John 8:28)
Old Testament readings show that when the Israelites prospered their attention to God grew lax, prone to infidelities. Their resulting hardships caused loud complaints, their berating their leaders and further distancing themselves from God. They did not see that God was working on them to strengthen their faith and love for Him; for, without testing, these virtues can never be genuine nor pure. In the 40th year of journeying through the wilderness to their "promised land," the Israelites, weary of eating manna and lacking water, murmured against God and Moses, and made themselves vulnerable to an evil attack by poisonous snakes. Some were saved by raising their eyes to a brass serpent on a pole.
The latter refers to Christ predicting His crucifixion in John 3:14-15. ". . . As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish." Christ tries to shock open the Pharisees' eyes to His Divinity by referring to Himself as "I Am," the very words God used to reveal His Name to Moses in Exodus 3:14. Being worldly-minded, concerned with preserving their status and authority, the Pharisees became enraged. Aware of their intention to crucify Him, Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I Am . . . ." His life-giving gift of salvation is still lovingly offered to all willing to accept it and live its conditions.
Saving God, deliver us from our blind selfishness and self-will. Imbue us with the same love that caused Christ to accept death on the cross for the world's salvation. Amen.
