Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

March 13, A.D. 2007

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Daniel 3:25, 34-43
Psalm 25:4-9
Matthew 18:21-35

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?
(se Matthew 18:33)

Forgiveness is central to God's saving plan. Based upon His mercy, it is His ultimate expression of love enabling us to approach the all-holy God with clean hands and a pure heart. He created us as vessels to bear His love, truth and mercy to a spiritually needful world, to unite all in His peace. But pride, self-worship, refuses to participate in God's own humility and self-giving love, breaking ties with Him through idolatry. Today's idols include money, fame, pleasure, beauty, power and sex. King Nebuchadnezzar wielded power by ordering his nation to worship a golden idol. Like the three Israelites who chose death over idolatry, are we willing to risk all to preserve our faithfulness to God?

Today's Gospel poses another question. If God Who is perfect love and truth can forgive the most heinous of sinners, how dare we who also sin and for whom Christ died on the cross withhold forgiveness to those who wrong us? Having accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, we assume an enormous debt of gratitude. Unforgiving pride makes a mockery of our faith and sparks in the soul consuming rage that today prompts worldwide acts of mindless and heartless death and destruction. God gave us the remedy through Christ, His Word. Our persistence in ignoring Him is inviting a self-inflicted fiery end to our civilization.

O God, Father of peace, help us to overcome our sin of unforgiveness and fill us to overflowing with your loving mercy that we may strive to heal all our troubled relationships. Amen
