Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Psalm 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
Whoever receives a child in my name receives me and the One who sent me.
(see Mark 9:37)
Sirach exhorts his people to renew their faith and trust in God; for in Him alone can they deal successfully with life's difficulties. He enables His children to cease interpreting events and people in this world's narrow context of often blaming God for its misery. We overlook that troubles are instigated by ourselves, imperfect people conflicting with others just like us. God gives us the choice of reacting to this world's sin with anger, bitterness and revenge or, through faith and trust, learn to forgive and love as God loves. He created us to live at peace, and humility is our key. If we face difficulties with faith and trust in God, He will use the fire of our adversity to purify and strengthen our love for Him and for others.
In today's Gospel Jesus deals with one of humanity's most destructive attitudes, that some people are superior and should be more highly regarded than others. They can't see that God has created an infinity of vessels, each made to uniquely bear His life into this world. Christ uses a child to show what God truly values: the childlike who know that apart from their Father they are helpless and destitute. We are to be thankful for the good gifts we receive and also for those He withholds. We are to forsake worldly attitudes and duplicity; learn to love, trust, accept and live in God's holy Word. Our one preoccupation in life should be to shine forth God's greatness and glory in the world, not flaunt our importance.
Almighty God, pour out Your Spirit upon us to impress upon our hearts that Your Word is the only way to fulfill Your divine plan for love, truth, peace and justice in this world. Amen.
