Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:
February 13, A.D. 2007
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Genesis 6:5-8; 7:1-5,10
Psalm 29:1-4, 9-10
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
Guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. (see Mark 8:15)
Christ's words above imply that a nation's moral health is deeply affected by its most visible and influential citizens. Today we disdain the power hungry Eastern fanatics who use religion to justify their hatreds and murders, but we remain blind to the prominent people wreaking havoc on our Western society. While half the world employs tyranny and violence to subjugate people, our side of the world touts "freedom" to quell religion, replace it with lies, immorality and consumerism fed daily to us by the informational-entertainment media. Both "fronts," fueled by universal human sin, wallow in destructive behavior.
Jesus' image of leaven describes how a small amount of yeast invades, feeds upon and quickly spreads through a mixture of flour and water. Unattended, dough will sour and rot. Jesus is saddened by His disciples who hear His word "leaven" to conclude that He is criticizing their forgetting to bring bread on their journey. This is doubly ironic, for they seem unaware of the far greater spiritual danger wrought by their leaders than physical hunger. They have also forgotten Christ's miracle of the loaves and fishes multiplied by God to provide nourishment to those who sought Him. In Noah's time, God annihilated a corrupt people; today He has put this task in our own selfish, faithless, self-destructive hands.
O heavenly Father, open our eyes and hearts to Your love and enable us to cooperate with Your divine plan of making Your saving love and truth known in this world. Amen.
