Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Genesis 1:20 thru 2:4
Psalm 8:4-9
Mark 7:1-13

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

You disregard God's Commandment but cling to human tradition. (Mark 7:8)

The first reading narrates God's creation of the world, His filling it with myriad life forms culminating in man, a creature uniquely made in His image and likeness. He desired man to enter into and participate in His Trinitarian stream of love. However, since genuine love can only exist if freely received and returned, He gave man the choice of accepting or rejecting His offer of a Father-child relationship based upon trust and obedience. Only in this way can a child grow in holiness as the Father is holy and therefore become fully human. For man to be completely alive he must first learn to live in God, the source of his being.

Today's Gospel shows the consequences of human failure to remain in God. Apart from Him we cannot learn how to live in His law of love and truth. Human pride and the desire for self-gratification are the greatest impediments to union with God, the purpose for which He created us. Sin prefers making its own rules. Jesus objected to the Pharisees placing their ritualistic washing of external impurities above cleansing their hearts of sinful errors. For example, their tradition of "corban," the act of dedicating all their possessions to God, could be and was often used to nullify God's Command to honor one's father and mother by absolving children from lovingly sharing their assets with parents who had fallen into need.

Loving Father, through Your Son and Spirit fill our hearts with compassion and a sincere desire to make every sacrifice necessary to our living in Your Law of Love. Amen.
