A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
Walk into any bookstore today and you will find shelves of self-help books. The authors of these claim to be able to tell us how to lose weight, boost our self-esteem, get a better job, find the perfect mate or help us solve any of an endless series of problems. Many of these authors are well intentioned and they claim that they once suffered from the very problem for which they are now providing help. Some of these books may be beneficial, others not. The fact is these sell very well to many who are looking for answers.
A few years back I was under tremendous stress in my work and I asked a physician I worked with at the time what he recommended for this. His answer at first shocked me. "Prayer," he said, "usually works for me." I could have found a self-help book for this or he could have prescribed any number of therapies, but after I pondered his response it seemed so simple and so complete.
We have a God who has endured it all. He was conceived, born, matured, hungry, poor, tempted and learned a trade. He worked, relaxed, ate, slept, cried, laughed, was loved and was hated, was wrongly accused, humiliated, tortured, suffered and died. This is why our prayer trumps all the self-help we could ever seek: Jesus knows what we are going through. Whatever the problem, our Lord knows through personal experience and will always comfort and provide the gentle answers needed for those who are seeking.
