Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
1 John 5:5-13
Psalm 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
The first reading from today's liturgy deserves to be read, read again and then again a third time. This message from John's first letter contains such deep truths about our faith that it needs a long and deep reflection.
John begins, "Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" He then concludes, "I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God." What can possibly surpass this great gift from the Father--the dual gifts of victory and life everlasting?
But many of us do not realize the victory we have been given. We find ourselves continually bogged down in the troubles of our world and in our lives. We worry, sometimes with extreme anxiety and seem to think we have no victory over anything. Our problem in this regard is our human failing of thinking of the temporal, physical world in which we live which throws much in our way of achieving peace and victory.
One should call to mind the words of Julian of Norwich whom the Lord told, "I make all things well, and I can make all things well, and I shall make all things well, and I will make all things well; and you will see for yourself that every kind of thing will be well." Julian goes on to say, "And in these words, God wishes us to be enclosed in rest and peace."
This, my sisters and brothers, is victory. It is victory over all things, in due time. It is victory over sin and death. The victory brings eternal life. Worry and anxiety are useless, as they are nothing in the eternal scheme. Yes, all things will be well and the victory is ours, forever.
