Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

August 19, A.D. 2005

Ruth 1:1, 3-6, 14-16, 22
Psalm 146:5-10
Matthew 22:34-40

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Has there ever been a word more often said, more often sung: more often misunderstood?

Dear Jesus, You call me to love You with all my heart, mind and soul -- to love my neighbor as I love myself. Yet how can I do that, when I don't understand what love IS! For, to understand love, I would have to understand YOU - for You are LOVE! (You and I both know how far away I am from that!)

Still, I think I understand, Lord, that it's not so important that I understand, so much as that I do. The more I try to love You -- the more You allow me to love. The more I love myself, me, with all my faults and failings -- the more I'm able to love others; for surely, I couldn't love myself unless You who are LOVE, loved me first.

You have proved Your love for me and for us all... and I ask myself right here and now: "What have I proved today?"

Only with Your grace, Lord, can I love as You call me to do. Help me to understand that all my sins are really my refusal to love. And always remind me that when I love You first and foremost, only then can I begin to love myself and others.

Thank you, Lord!
