Every day, we need to go to our quiet place...

Today's Scriptural Meditation Readings:

June 4, A.D. 2005

Tobit 12:1,5-15,20
Tobit 13:2,6
Luke 2:41-51

A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:

Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them...
(see Luke 2:51)

Love, not fear, best motivates obedience. We obey God when we recognize that our loving Creator asks us to behave in certain ways for our personal and the collective good. Mary's Immaculate Heart knew God and obeying Him, gave us the gift of Christ. Likewise, Jesus, united in heart and will with His Father, gave humanity salvation.

Because sin blinds us to our true identity -- beings created by God for the purpose of sharing His divine life -- we follow our own wills and by example teach children this destructive behavior. We express outrage at school shootings, yet blithely kill 1.3 million babies yearly by abortion. Research uses live human embryos then disposes them like garbage. Our entertainment media, games and cyberspace are filled with sex and violence. Schools teach that humanity is an accident, highly evolved sea slime -- then we wonder why children lack self-esteem, place little value on others.

Hope is seeing our derangement, turning for guidance to Christ , God's living Word, and following Him through obedience to His Holy Spirit who indwells us at Baptism. Mary's Immaculate heart ever intercedes for us, that our hearts and minds will be reshaped into the image of her Son.

Grace abounds. God's love and truth surrounds us, desires to fill us, if only we would open our mouths to ask. Prayer and repentance are the first steps to salvation.

Blessed Spirit, teach us obedience;
transform our natural selves into spiritual beings,
true children of our heavenly Father. Amen
