Scripture from Today's Liturgy of the Word:
2 Timothy 1:1-8
A brief reflection on today's Scripture passages:
Acknowledging the Spirit of God. . .
Saint Paul begins his letters to Timothy and Titus. These are two souls very dear to the Apostle, commissioned by him for essential ministry to the Church, with reflective reminders of his gratitude and place before God. Paul seeks to encourage his beLoveds, by acknowledging his deep appreciation for conversion, his hope for life and his firm dedication to preserving the gift of faith which he courageously and fearlessly shares with never-ceasing gratitude.
Paul's constant mindfulness of his gifts and struggles strengthen and compel him to share these with all souls, to press forward in his ministry while giving encouragement to others. The wellspring of strength which comes from God ever-present in Paul's vigilantly attentive soul, allows him to persevere and to see himself as he truly is before the power and mercy of God's ever present Love. This love with God gives the new life of faith to souls like Timothy and Titus, whom Paul refers to as his true children, born of the common Faith. Paul also asks that this love be fruitful and multiply to the souls they are sent to serve.
The Responsorial Psalm very clearly magnifies this intention. The spirit of love, power and self-control is the spirit that produces fruit in the face of hardship. Jesus reminds us that the Spirit which dwells within each faithful soul and accomplishes the will and good of God, is a spirit to be revered, honored and adored. When we blaspheme the source of all good, we deny truth itself, the perfect outpouring of love incarnate through the Son and those in Him.
